Thursday
18th August 2011 - Elfrida Sports Day
Elfrida Sports Day 2011 was a free event at which people
with learning difficulties could try a range of sports
in a friendly, casual and supportive environment. The
aim was to let people discover what kind of sports they
could enjoy at our weekly groups, to find out which
other sports people might be interested in and to publicise
ourselves so more people take advantage of the opportunities
we offer. Coaches took groups for tennis, netball, cycling,
football, cricket, boccia, tai chi and walking. Many
people who attended found new things to try, such as
tai chi, which many had not encountered before and offers
a very accessible way of exploring body movement. Cycling
was also new to many, whose experiences were enabled
by specially adapted bicycles. At the end of the day,
Lindsay Wilson from Interactive awarded prizes to participants
and spoke a little about Islington’s adoption
of the Inclusive and Active 2 strategy. It turned out
to be a great way of getting people active and of working
with several other organisations to create a community
event. It was such a success that we hope to make it
an annual event and make the next one even bigger!
