Joy Hurkoo is an artist born in Mauritius. Moving to Finsbury Park as a
baby, he has kept contact with his place of birth through visits and family.
Joy's interest in making art started as a child, he took part in all kinds
of art activities at school.
As a resident of North London, his hobbies reflect city life. Travelling
on buses, shopping and going to the cinema is how Joy spends his free time
when not at the arts workshop or with his support worker. Image:

Joy enjoys going to visit art galleries particularly historic collections
such as the National Gallery.
Joy has been part of the Siren Arts Workshop for the past three years. Based
at Cockpit Studios in North London, it has given Joy the opportunity to
work alongside artists, work at his own pace and to develop his own strong
distinctive style. Image: Colour
and Shape
Joy has taken part in several group exhibitions and has recently contributed
work to a calendar produced by Mencap and sold nationally.
Joy's style has been refined over the past three years, his work looks deceptively
simple on the surface but this encourages closer inspection to reveal sure
drawing and a feel for shape and form.
His polyblock work is made up of careful marks scored into the surface to
make a unified whole. In "Six Polyblocks" these images are placed
next to each other and with the delicate colouring produces an artwork that
is both subtle and strong. Image:

Joy
is a quiet artist who makes bold artwork. It draws the viewer in and demands
to be looked at.

In "Blues Tile" and "Blue Blocks" Joy has made a two-dimensional
piece three dimensional to exaggerate the shape whilst keeping the drawn
elements.
